Having so many different options to chose from, it can be difficult to decide which gold jewelry you are looking for. The value of your pieces depends on what the jewelry is made of.

Know your jewelry by understanding the difference between solid gold, gold filled, gold plated, and gold color.

Solid Gold

The most valuable jewelry in the market is Solid Gold. It's 100% pure gold, and it's value is expressed as carats or karats. Most gold jewelries are made of 14K, 18K, or 24K. The purest form of gold is 24 carats which has a soft texture and is has a very yellow color. In order for gold to be used as jewelry it's often mixed with other metals for the purpose of making it durable.

Gold Filled

A fraction of the cost of solid gold. Gold filled is made by bonding gold to a base metal to give it the appearance of gold. The process involves a high amount of heat and pressure. However, over time, Gold Filled jewelry does not wear well and does not hold value like Solid Gold does. Gold Filled is suitable for fashion jewellery that has a limited life span.

Gold Plated

Gold Plated jewelry consists of a very thin layer of gold being electrically charged onto a base metal or sterling silver. If sterling silver is plated in gold this can also be referred to as “Vermeil”. They have an average lifespan of up to a year (with minimal exposure to moisture).

Which one is the best?

Gold Plated pieces are a more affordable alternative, however they only contain a tiny amount of gold and any friction will cause the plating to rub off quickly, leaving a dull piece of metal. Most base metals used in Gold Plated jewellery also tend to stain your skin green or cause allergic reactions. Gold Plated jewelry is only suitable for fashion jewelry, and requires more care and maintenance.

All of our jewelry is either Gold Plated over Brass or Sterling Silver for sensitive skin customers.
